Misconceptions about Shiites that need to be stopped

427

“O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you.”(The Holy Quran 49:13)

In our daily life we see people criticizing each other on the basis of particularism. The Shia-Sunni divide is the major conflict in the history of Islam. Every sect has its own beliefs and concepts. Without knowing the whole detail and explanation, one should not start speaking bluntly about anyone’s faith. A war has been started from the very beginning which has never let both of the schisms live peacefully.

Most of us have made false assumptions about the Shia Islam which needs to be turned down immediately. We need to stop this hate intercourse between both of the groups. I know some fallacious facts about Shiites which actually hurt like how could you just speak anything without going to depth and collecting evidences?

1. Shia Muslim don’t pray to Allah

Shockingly, one of the misconception is Shiites don’t pray to Allah Almighty. It’s wrong totally, they pray to Allah same as all the Muslims five times a day and believe on One and Only Allah. They love Allah as much as other Muslims do and there is nothing to be doubted about their belief.

2. Shiites offer only three times

Another false concept, Shia Muslims offer only three prayers a day. This is not true, the only difference is of timings. Sunni Muslims offer five times and no doubt Shia Muslims pray Five times too, they just split them into three times and yes it has a valid reason. Quran mentions to offer three prayers a day and many Sunni scholars have approved this statement. Praying five times a day is based on the hadith which many Muslims follow.

3. Shias have a different Quran

Sadly, it is assumed that Shiites add 10 extra chapters in Quran (Astagfirullah). It has been researched, Holy Quran in the homes and Masajids of Shias is same as the original one. There is one and original Quran for everyone and I must remind here, that Allah took responsibility of his Holy book so nobody could change a single word in Quran, adding 10 more chapters is still a very big deal.

4. Shia pray to a rock

“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘The earth has been made for me a place of prostration and a means of purification, so wherever a man of my Ummah is when the time for prayer comes, let him pray.’” Bukhari

This myth comes from a point that Shias use a torba while doing sujood. This is actually done to keep the practice of Holy Prophet (S.A.W) did during his prayers. Many hadith has claimed this practice as well.

5. Shia practice temporary marriages

Temporary marriages were allowed but they were discouraged later in the rule of Caliph Umer. Shiites do not encourage such activities while some abuse it as well.

6. Shiites don’t pay poor due

Totally wrong, Shiites do pay Zakat. They not only pay 2.5% but also extra 20% as charity which they give directly to poor.

7. They consider imams superior than Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H)

Imams are carriers of the message of Islam so that is why Hazrat Ali is loved and respected among all the Shiites. Hazrat Muhammad (S.A.W) Prophet, Messenger and leader which is already written in Quran. Shiites love Holy Prophet (S.A.W) more than everything like Sunnis.

These are a few misconceptions about Shia Islam while there are many more which should be evacuated from the minds of all Muslims. We must hope to establish a peaceful society because all Muslims are brothers to each other. I would suggest to do some research before opening mouth to speak anything false without valid claims. It is our responsibility to seek knowledge about our religion Islam and extract the true concepts.
