“No nation can rise to the height of glory unless your women are side by side with you; we are victims of evil customs. It is crime against humanity that our women are shut up within the four walls of the house as prisoners. There is no sanction anywhere for the deplorable condition in which our women have to live”-Muhammad Ali Jinnah,1994
In a globalizing world gender equality and empowerment of women are vital tools to achieve the sustainable development therefore it’s very important to bring women into mainstream, So that they can play its due role in the development of the country.
Pakistan has signed many international and national accords to gender equality and women empowerment including convention on Elimination of all forms of discrimination(CEDAW) Nation Plan of Action(NPA) and millennium Development Goals(MDGs). Despite of all the efforts, yet majority of Pakistani women are deprived of their basic rights.
It has been unfortunate for Pakistan that it had some leaders in the past who were narrow minded pertaining the empowerment of women.
Zia-ul-haq in his tenure when imposed martial law in 1979 had introduced discriminatory legislation in which women were entitled second-class citizens. Intellectual abilities of women had been doubted and they were considered inconsistent for key jobs like police, army, air force and naval force.
Besides all women have proved that they are equally strong and determinant and can serve in any department of their country. Woman like Marium Muktiar laid their life serving their country and shown the world that women are no more less than men.
Empowerment of women in police is a big matter it does not only assure right of women in this department but can lead to restraint the crimes like sexual and physical harassment of women and injustice to women in our society.
Such cases has been reported in which SHO and ASP of Police station had been indulged in sexual and physical abuse of women who had been arrested or brought for interrogation, How could there be justice assured? When those charged with enforcing the right of law themselves are culprits.
Therefore it is mandatory to establish female police stations or to endow key posts like SHO,ASP and SP to women. Benazir Bhutto in her tenure established Pakistan’s first Women police station. It was a good initiative but like many other social schemes, it was launched just to carry out an order, without proper ground work. So we have to make sure that not only we initiate such schemes but also keep an eye on them.
Sexual and physical abuse of women can not be prevented, unless more and more women are not appointed to police and key posts are not endowed to them and guardians(policemen) themselves would keep harassing and sexually abusing the innocent one and there would be no stop to this never-ending atrocity.
