+++ on the 24th of July when a suicide attack took place near the Arfa Karim Towers. Senior government officials have confirmed that 26 people, including nine policemen, have been martyred while over 60 have been injured.
The focal target of this blast happened to be the police and Tehreek-i-Taliban claimed responsibility for this act of terrorism.
In the midst of this catastrophe, twitter exploded with tweets that offered support and condolences for the people affected by this tragedy. While most tweets were deemed harmless, one such tweet was not as well received by the general public.
Salman Ahmad, musician and activist, related the blast to the currently very viral Panama Case. People were very unhappy with how Salman Ahmad chose to highlight the impending result of the Panama Case rather than offer his condolences to the people affected by the blast.
While the Panama case is undoubtedly a great topic for discussion, mingling a catastrophe as big as the Lahore blast in which people lost their lives, with mere politics was deemed insensitive by the people on Twitter.
People were quick to compare the thoughtful yet collected response of Imran Khan to the rash tweet by Salman Ahmad.
While it is true that everyone is entitled to their own opinions, there are events that need to be held in higher esteem due to their sheer magnitude. Losing loved ones is a trauma that can not be equated to politics therefore, an effort should be made to separate the two. Celebrities should know the power of their words and make an effort to police their opinions accordingly. Tweeting carelessly can not only hurt the sentiments of those affected but can also kindle resentment towards you.
May the people affected by the Lahore blast find peace and we all find it in ourselves to rise above petty controversy.
